Introducing Radio TNO: the Music of The New Order, an unofficial music submod of over 300 songs from the nations of TNO!

Inspired by the Soldier's Radio mod for vanilla and the Cold War Music Mod, the new mod Radio TNO provides an opportunity for you to experience TNO through the ears of the common soldier. Featuring popular music from the corners of the world, Radio TNO offers the chance to hear the same music and to put yourself in the same mindset as a citizen of any of the major powers of the world in the timeframe of TNO. Five unique stations with over three hundred songs give the world a different perspective on art and culture, and compete with each other to win over the listening population.
The Armed Forces Radio and Television Service (USA):
Formed in 1942 to entertain American soldiers during the Second World War, the station's broadcasts of American music and programs quickly became a powerful way to promote American cultural power all over the globe. Even if the conflict has ended in defeat, the mission of the network lives on, and a television component has been introduced as well. From Guyana, to South Africa, to Indonesia, and Persia, an American soldier can always be assured that he can listen to Jimi Hendrix and The Supremes on his transistor radio. However, America is still a troubled nation, and the listener may not be always be provided with an escape from subtle and unsubtle reminders of America's situation.
Nippon Hoso Kyokai (Japan):
Japan's state broadcaster managed to entertain Japanese forces in the Second World War, through the broadcasts of music and sports, and Allied units through the Tokyo Rose propaganda broadcasts. Years after the end of the war, their task of meeting the media needs of the Sphere and putting on a friendly face for the empire has not stopped, and they remain committed to promoting a domestic and purely Japanese culture. And Japan has home-grown artists they are going to introduce the world to. But through the treaty ports on the American coast comes new sounds that begin to seep their way into the listener's ear. And it's only a matter of time before the rock and folk of the west trigger a massive sea change in the direction of Japanese music for years to come...
Reichs-Rundfunk-Gesellschaft (Germany):
The Reich believes Europe's culture is saved. Mahler, Mendelssohn, Debussy, Stravinsky, and the like have been blacklisted from ever being played in the concert halls of the great capitals of Europe. And the German people will not listen to the drum breaks and solos of the so-called "negro music" from the United States. Music from the enemy states in the Triumvirate has been banned as well. Thus, there is plenty of room for the German listener to have Wagner hammered into their ears, with a smattering of other less-important German composers on the side. But as the situation spirals out of control, more and more does the Reich rely on light Schlager music and recollections of past glory to keep their population in line. And in the depths of society, more politically charged dissident works lurk. One just has to find them...
BBC (England):
Germany has limited the songs of its client states as well. Britain, for instance, is fed a steady diet of German composers like Wagner and the German-born Handel in an attempt to perhaps eventually awaken the Aryan within the English people. But many have their own songs in their hearts, ones they will sing proudly once the back of the Reich is turned. But even more consequentially, the trickle of American culture gathered from the Scottish radio signals will turn into a flood, as the Germans leave and the Americans begin to move in. And no matter how hard the English government may try, they cannot put these chickens back in their eggs. The result will have implications that will reach around the musical world.
UVB-76 (Russia):
In the late 1940's, some Finnish fishermen noticed a strange transmission from the wastes of Russia. A strange series of buzzes and hums, punctuated by a monotone voice reading a series of letters and numbers, as well as a variety of Russian songs. Despite the West Russian War, the fall of the West Russian Revolutionary Front, and the German bombing raids, the strange signal keeps transmitting. An attempt by one German aircraft to ride the signal and target it exactly ended with the bomber missing with all hands and the signal uninterrupted. The origin of the signal is unknown. The meaning of the songs and signals, or their purpose, is also unknown. And one wonders what might occur if the signal should ever stop transmitting…
All these songs, and many, many more, are available in the Radio TNO mod. Featuring many familiar favorites, and many exotic hits, Radio TNO will provide you with an authentic experience for your next playthrough. Available now on the steam workshop. A complete soundtrack list for reference can be found at this link. Radio TNO is also compatible with other music mods such as Last Waltz of Europe.

Can you hear our voice? Co-creating a film about opera.

Can you hear our voice? Co-creating a film about opera.
Dear people of Reddit, opera lovers,
What do you think? We're about to make a film that should bring opera to a different audience. At least, that is our mission.
The story is about a Congolese boy who loves classical music. In the Congo he grew up listening to his mother’s vinyl collection of arias and concertos by Mozart, Handel and Tchaikovsky. He was part of the local classical choir and was well on the way to making his mother proud and becoming a singer. Then the war came and he and his family had to flee their home. They're moving to the UK.
When he arrives in London a lot has already happened that adds a bunch of drama to the story.
Campaign Image

Social Video
This project is in collaboration with The Royal Opera House and the script will be co-created with the people of Intermission Youth. The nice people of the ROH provided ways to introduce IY to the world of opera. Think of workshops by Aga Serugo-Lugo, and tickets to several opera's (Othello, Magic Flute, Werther).
Now they are fired up to work on the script for our film: Hear My Voice.
We would love to hear your thoughts. What do you think of our mission? The story? The fact that we're starting a crowdfunding campaign to get the project financed? Or your thoughts in general?Keep in mind, we are not professional marketeers. Not at all.
We are two female film makers trying to make a difference in the world. Trying to smash stereotypes, and provide platforms so that unheard voices can be heard. Any tips are kindly appreciated.
P.s, please be gentle.
Edit: You are all too kind! Thank you for all the love and support! We feel privileged to be able to do this project and to work with all these inspirational people. It means even more that you all are so positive about the idea. We can't thank you enough!
Edit 2: Added Video for social media.

Belgium: Guns, Germs & Beer

This is a playthrough of Victoria 2, playing as Belgium starting in 1836. Victoria is often referred to as Europa Universalis's inbred cousin. The guy you'd rather not see at family parties as he is trying to shag you sister Alabama style.
As with most Paradox titles it is a historical grand strategy game, this one in a world beset by the rapid changes of industrialization, social and political upheaval. In this crucible in which the modern world was forged Belgium was one of the key players and went on to become a global powerhouse boxing way above its level and gaining international recognition for it's innovation and prestige.

Ceci n'est pas une pays

At the Congress of Vienna in 1815 the Southern Netherlands and the Northern Netherlands were united to form one state. Luckily the current date is januari 1st of the year 1836 and mistakes were fixed. It has been six years since we threw off the oppressive yoke of the Dutch and an uneasy peace was signed on november the 4th 1830, recognizing Belgium was indeed a real country.
Belgium (1836)
The world (1836)
Our glorious nation has yet to recover from the ravages of the secession and Greater Belgium for now consist of four regions. Flanders, Wallonie, the Dutch province of Limburg and Luxembourg to the south. Over the last years several diplomatic envoys were sent by the Dutch Republic stating Limburg is rightful Orangist clay and as such tensions remain high along our northern border.
Gross Belgien

His Majesty's Government

Since we are Belgium and we are the best country in the world we start off the game with the most powerful government. We are a constitutional monarchy meaning we are technically speaking a democracy. People are allowed to vote. By people we mean very rich people with a penis. And with democracy we mean the 1% get to vote but if they vote wrong we can just choose whatever cabinet we want. A true Belgian Utopia where voting results are made up, the points don't matter and governments are formed in less then 541 days.
Government
We begin the game under the leadership of the 'Parti Catholique' supported by our mostly conservative and reactionary population, those who believe the old days were better, back when people were allowed to work unlimited hours a day. Most of our populace are happy with the status quo but a growing number are yearning for an even more liberal fatherland. The Parti Catholique doesn't like war and even though the government can intervene in economical matters it does not allow for our glorious nation to invest in new industries and improve the exploitation of the proletariat. Looking for future economical opportunities Leopold I is considering demanding the current cabinet to resign and form a new one based on more modern values of governing such as mass labor exploitation and bringing 'civilization' to the people of Africa.
brofist >> here << please
Luckily we have two other political parties, the 'Liberale Partij' and 'Nationale Partij'. The first being any capitalist wet dream of free trade, laissez faire, trickle down economics and looking for any good reasons to claim your property is theft and it actually belongs to the Bourgeoisie. On the other hand the 'Nationale Partij' prefers tight control of the government over the economy and an outright jingoist (translation = USA:'hold my beer') stance when it comes to war. Any liberal isn't a true patriot and we have always been at war with West Africa. After all the world is our oyster and we will need more land and citizens plebs to claim Belgium's rightful spot as a Great Power. While our country for now has only three major parties, progressive minds are questioning the order of things and are looking for new ways to organize our society and its means of production.
National parties
Last but not least we have already passed several political and social reforms making Belgium the most progressive country of the world. The liberal haven that is our country allows for public meetings, free press and as mentioned before, any rich penis gets a vote! Socially speaking Belgium is the workers paradise of its time with unparalleled workers rights such as the limited 14 hours work day, a bare minimum of safety regulations and something resembling healthcare to ensure our plebs reproduce faster than they die. Luckily our industry is free of the burdens of minimum wages, child labor is creating record profits and we have yet to support the costs of a school or pension system. Trust in our judiciary is at an all time high with capital punishment being executed for minor crimes and if you can't pay your debts you get free housing and food in the underfunded Belgian prison system, as is tradition en la patrie. As such we are considered an aspiration for many a nation, a vision of a true modern society as depicted in our national anthem.

The Belgian population is mostly made up of 55% Flemish and 30% Walloons and some French, German and Dutch minorities. The Belgian population is our biggest strength. Half our people can read and write making us one of the most literate countries in the world, a major advantage to any nation wishing to create a workers paradise. High literacy allows for more research and more importantly lots of plebs who can read and as such discover the wonder that is 19th century factory work.
Population
For now only Walloon and Picard culture are accepted as our primary cultures making Flemish, Germans and Dutch second class citizens of La Belgique, ô mère chérie. Flanders is however mainly Vlaams and as nationalist uprisings continue we might consider adding them to our accepted cultures since unhappy plebs are bad working plebs and we need to make more money so we can build more factories so we can have a bigger proletariat. For now our Flemish citizens will remain Flemish but anybody in the south is slowly adopting our Leitkultur: Walloon. Belgium attracts a lot of immigrants and due to its open border policy many flock to the land of the Free where people only work 14 hours a day and you don't need child day care. Nevertheless some of the unemployed are seeking their luck in the new world, with many tales of opportunities in the United States of America.
As for employment, most of our citizens are either farming in the North or are digging the mines in search for more iron and coal in the South. As we increase the production efficiency of our farms and mines we will free up more workers for our manufacturies. Most of our industrial production is still done by artisans earning their living in small scale workshops. However we already have an unparalleled 6.5% of our population working in our industries, making us one of the most advanced industrial nations in the world. The bourgeoisie is prosperous and capitalist investors are looking for new opportunities to bring an even better division of production to our society.
Fiscal Budget
For now we have a rather small population and our country consists of 4.18 million citizens out of which 1.04 million are able workers. Our population is growing at a steady rate of 10.000 citizens a month. We need money to invest in better infrastructure such as factories, ports and railroads and we also need a bigger army to make sure more people can enjoy the advantages of being Belgian. So we are taxing the poor to death, levy extreme tariffs on imports to protect our local industry - and make more money - while the middle class and rich are left with a 0% flat tax rate as to stop people from being poor. We are also spending a lot of money on bureaucrats to increase our tax efficiency since fiscal fraud is bad and people should pay their taxes. Being a civilized nation we are investing to improve our education, since our piss poor peasants need to be able to read before they can be beset with the advantages of working in the Belgian military-industrial complex.

Beer 'n Guns, what could go wrong?

Work is the curse of the drinking classes.
Oscar Wilde .
Industry is the shoulder of the giant we stand on to lift our little country above the crowd and makes us the envy of many a civilized nation. Our industrial production is second to none, only being surpassed by the collective might of the entire British Empire which was at it's zenith during the rule of Queen Victoria. The Empire controlled one fourth of the entire worlds population and territory at the time. We are also the second country in the world to adopt the revolution that is railroads, starting off with the first railway between Brussels and Antwerp taken into service in 1935. This was only five years after the first ever railway being built between Liverpool and Manchester and wondrous feat a the time. This was truly the age of railroads. Railways were not only the first signs of industrialization but also globalization as rail time went on to become the global time as we know it today, introducing timezones and accurate tracking of time.
resources
Besides having a superb railway our fatherland is also blessed with many natural resources, most importantly iron and coal. Brussels has a sulfur mine, used to make guns, artillery and ammunition. Our farms in the north produce livestock but more importantly grain, a core ingredient of many liquors. In the south we also have some wood which we can use to start our own Ikea business, supplying the Lumpenproletariat of the world with furniture. Some of these resources are nice to have but the excessive abundance of iron and coal puts us in a prime position to kickstart our industrialization and keep competing with the big boys around the block, most of the empires of Europe harboring a tenfold of our population and armies that dwarf ours.
more resources
As for now Vlaanderen already has a well developed cloth and beer industry, while also producing tin cans to feed armies. We also produce cement, a much sought after product for any nation wishing to expand its infrastructure and economic might. Advisers of His Majesty's Government have suggested we should support our Beer industry by investing in glass works which they suggest to build in Hasselt, home to many of the richer coal mines of Belgium. They also point out the benefits of industrialized cloth production and the many advantages it could bring for the workers of our country.
Factories
Wallonia however is the pearl in the crown of Belgium, one of them most advanced industrial regions of its time, at the forefront of technological and industrial innovation. With coal and iron being abundant we are producing a massive amount of steel, which has also encouraged a thriving weapons industry fueling the many wars and revolutions that marked the 19th century. Since you can't have a Belgian province without alcohol they also have a huge beer industry, supplying the populace with their dagschotels. With the recent succes of the first railway many capitalist are gathering money to develop a nationwide railway that would increase the supply and output of our magnificent industrial complex and produce even more guns, garments and steel. And beer. Lots and lots of beer.

The Birth of an Empire

War is a continuation of politics by other means.
Carl von Clausewitz, Theory of war (1832) .
At the onset of the age of industrialization the world had many superpowers even though Britain was clearly the top dog of it's day. It massive empire crossing the world and Britannia ruled the waves uncontested. While being a giant it was still kept in check by the other Great Powers such as Russia, France, Prussia and Austria all of which were fielding large armies of themselves while also setting their first baby steps towards industrialization. Across the Atlantic the United States has seen an unprecedented economic growth and migration but storms are on the horizons as the country is divided on the plight of it's slave population.
Great Powers
Belgium has not yet achieved Great Power status but is in a prime position to be so. Spain's colonial empire has been reduced to a footnote in history with only Cuba and the Philippines remaining. In the mean time the sick man of Europe - the Ottoman Empire - is on the brink of economic collapse and civil wars are plaguing the Balkans. As both of them are declining in power we are on the verge of taking our rightful places as a true Global Power, in a key position during the time the West was carving up the world in spheres of influence and colonial empires.
Diplomacy
After our secession of the Dutch we settled for a truce of ten years but the Netherlands never gave up it's claims over Limburg and is even lobbying for an independent Luxembourg, free of the oppression of that is the Belgian gulag state. A major supporter of the Belgian independence is the British Empire which will protect us and any attack on Belgian soil shall be seen as an attack on the British crown itself. The British were also kind enough to supply a monarch , prince Leopold I of Saxe-Coburg-Saalfeld, albeit not being of the same dynasty. cries in Habsburg. To the south the French are looking upon the political changes happening in the lower lands and have invested heavily in Belgian industry in an attempt to gain influence over this liberal experiment that is not even supposed to be a real country. With time they might bring Belgium into their sphere of influence if the newfound country cannot into glory.

Iron and Blood

Army & Fleet
Our glorious fatherland is fielding a decent army, yet it isn't able to compete with any of its neighbor by itself. Although we have decent artillery support, some of our brigades are still cavalries and as such pretty useless in an age dominated by line infantry and enormous artillery barrages. We have ordered our generals to disband the cavalries and build up a Hussars, lightly armed troops used for reconnaissance while we are expanding our artillery brigades. Line infantry is just doing what the name implies. Form a line, keep a line and die in a line instead of the back line made up of expensive artillery that sculpted the landscape of European warfare. The tiny Belgian army is led by king Leopold I himself, his mere presence and prestige boosting morale and organization of our troops.
Leadership

Manifest Destiny

God has the Power to make it happen.
You have the authority to make it happen.
So stop complaining, get up and manifest your destiny.
Tony Warrick .
We are on a crossroad in history and many possible futures lie ahead of us. Some members of parliament propose The Netherlands would be far better off under Belgian leadership and their richer colonies are ripe for the taking. However to take on the Netherlands we will need a bigger army. There are also many opportunities in West Africa for any European aspiring greatness. West Africa has a lot of expansion potential as we can claim any of the uncivilized nations for God, King and the Fatherland and bring the wonders of 'advancement' to the natives. It also has huge manpower pools we could use to expand our armies and take on the big boys in Europe. And last but not least we have Walloon minorities living in North France who long to be true citizens of the bestest country in the world.
Dutch Java
This game is all about the industrialization so in time we will have to choose which path to take, ranging from unbridled ultra-liberalism to and end of property and the beginning of a true workers paradise. Shall we continue to build palace after palace for the rich or shall we aspire to a more noble purpose and build decent housing for the poor? The choice is up to you guys!
I hope to have a more action packed 2nd part, but I had to describe the situation the Fatherland in 1836. From now on we will proceed to paint the world en Tricolore. Thank you if you got all the way down to here :o and let me know what path Belgium should take!

For now our Flemish citizens in Flanders will remain Flemish but anybody in the south is slowly adopting our leitkultur, Walloon. Belgium attracts a lot of immigrants and due to its open border policy many flock to the land of the Free where people only work 14 hours a day and you don't need child day care. Nevertheless some of the unemployed are seeking their luck in the new world, with many tales of the opportunities in the United States of America.
As for employment, most of our citizens are either farming the land in the north and laborers in the south are digging the mines in search for more iron and coal. As we increase the production efficiency of our farms and mines we will free up more workers for our manufacturies. Most of our industrial production is still done by artisans earning their living in small scale workshops. However we already have an unparalleled 6.5% of our population working in our industries making us one of the most advanced industrial nations in the world. The bourgeoisie is making money and capitalist investors are looking for new opportunities to bring an even better division of production to our society.
Fiscal Budget
For now we have a rather small population and our country consists of 4.18 million citizens out of which 1.04 million are able workers and our population is growing at a steady rate of 10.000 citizens a year. We need money to invest in better infrastructure such as factories, ports and railroads and we also need a bigger army to make sure more people can enjoy the advantages of being Belgian. So we are taxing the poor to death, levy extreme tariffs on imports to protect our local industry - and make more money - while the middle class and rich are left with a 0% tax rate as to stop people from being poor. We are also spending a lot of money on bureaucrats to increase our tax efficiency since fiscal fraud is bad and people should pay their taxes. Being a civilized nation we are investing these taxes to improve our education, since our piss poor peasants need to be able to read before they can be beset with the advantages of working in the Belgian military-industrial complex.

Beer 'n Guns, what could go wrong?

Work is the curse of the drinking classes.
Oscar Wilde
Industry is the shoulder of the giants we stand on to lift our little country above the crowd and makes us the envy of many a civilized nation. Our industrial production is second to none, only being surpassed by the collective might of the entire British Empire which was at it's zenith during the rule of Victoria, controlling one fourth of the entire worlds population and territory. We are also the second country in the world to adopt the revolution that is railroads, starting off with the first railway between Brussels and Antwerp taken into service in 1935 only five years after the first ever railway being built between Liverpool and Manchester, starting the age of railroads. Railways were not only the first signs of industrialization but also globalization as railtime went on to become the global time as we know it with it's timezones.
Although all these resources are nice to have, the excessive abundance of iron and coal puts us in a prime position to kickstart our industrialization and to keep competing with the big boys around the block, most of the empires of Europe harboring a tenfold of our population and armies that dwarf our little country.
more resources
As for now Vlaanderen already has a well developed cloth and beer industry, while also producing tin cans to feed armies and cement, a much sought after product for any nation wishing to expand its infrastructure and economic might. Advisers of His Majesty's Government have suggested we should support our Beer industry by investing in glass works which they suggest to build in Hasselt, home to many of the richer coal mines of Belgium. They also point out the wonders of industrialized clothing production and the many advantages it could bring for workers of our country and suggest Aalst as a great location.
And lots and lots of beer.

The Birth of a Global Empire?

War is a continuation of politics by other means.
Carl von Clausewitz, Theory of war (1832)
At the onset of the age of industrialization the world had many superpowers even though Britain was clearly the top dog of it's day. It massive empire crossing the world and Britannia ruled the waves uncontested. While Britain was a giant it was still kept in balance by the other Great Powers such as Russia, France, Prussia and Austria all of which were fielding large armies of themselves while also setting their first baby steps towards industrialization. Across the Atlantic the United States sees an unprecedented economic growth and migration but storms are on the horizons as the country is divided on the plight of it's slave population.
Great Powers
Belgium has not yet achieved Great Power status but is in a prime position to do so, seeing Spain's colonial empire has been reduced to a footnote with only Cuba and the Philippines remaining. In mean time the sick man of Europe, the Ottoman Empire, spanning a huge empire but on the brink of economic collapse and civil war in the Balkans. With both of them declining in power we are on the verge of taking our rightful places as a true Global Power.
Diplomacy
After our secession of the Dutch we settled for a truce for ten years but the Netherlands never gave up it's claims over Limburg and is even lobbying for an independent Luxembourg, free of the oppression of the Belgian gulag. A major supporter of the Belgian independence is the British empire which will protect us and any attack on Belgian soil shall be seen as an attack on the British crown. The Brittish were also kind enough to supply a monarch , prince Leopold I of Saxe-Coburg-Saalfeld, albeit not being of the same dynasty. cries in Habsburgs To the south the French are looking upon the political changes happening in the lower lands and have invested heavily in Belgian industry in an attempt to gain influence over this liberal experiment that is not even supposed to be a real country. With time they might bring Belgium into their sphere of influence if the newfound country cannot into glory.

Iron and Blood

Otto von Bismarck
Army & Fleet
Our glorious fatherland is fielding a decent army, yet it isn't able to compete with any of its neighbor by itself. Although we have decent artillery support, some of our brigades are still cavalries and as such pretty useless in an age dominated by line infantry and enormous artillery barrages. We have ordered our generals to disband the cavalries and build up a Hussars, lightly armed troops used for reconnaissance while we are expanding our artillery brigades. Line infantry is just doing what the name implies, form a line, keep a line and die in a line instead of the back line made up of expensive artillery that sculpted the landscape of European warfare. The tiny Belgian army is led by king Leopold I himself, his mere presence and prestige boosting morale and organization of our troops.
Leadership

Manifest Destiny

We are on a crossroads and many futures lie ahead of us. The Netherlands could be reunited under Belgian leadership or we could just take some of their richer colonies in Java. To take on the Netherlands we however need a bigger army unless we make the Germans or French fight our wars for us. There are many opportunities in West Africa with its huge manpower pools we could use to expand our armies and take on the big boys. We also have Walloon minorities living in North France who long to be true citizens of the best country in the world, so we got that going for us.
This game is all about the industrialization so in time we will have to choose which path to take, ranging from unbridled ultra-liberalism to and end of property and the beginning of a true communist utopia. Shall we continue to build palace after palace for the rich or shall we aspire to a more noble purpose and build decent housing for the poor? The choice is up to you guys!
I hope to have a more action packed 2nd part, but I had to describe the situation the Fatherland in 1830. From now on we will proceed to paint the world en Tricolore. Thank you if you got all the way down to here :o

As with most Paradox titles it is a historical grand strategy game, this one in a world beset by the rapid changes of industrialization and social and political upheaval.

Belgium 1836

Government
We start off with 'Parti Catholique' supported by our mostly conservative and reactionary population, those who believe the old days were better back when people were allowed to work unlimited hours a day. Most of our populace are ok with the way things are being run but a growing number are yearning for an even more liberal fatherland.

Harptacular Boston review

Small album here: https://imgur.com/a/obkrf9p
Just got back from a couple days of the fun Harptacular "festival" run by Lyon & Healy / Salvi. They held this in Nashville, Orlando, Omaha, and Boston this year. It's free and fairly informal. It's a pretty unique event and I'm glad they offer this. As a new harper it was a great chance to see some harp music live, which seems to be rare, chat with harp players, and—most important to me—play some beautiful instruments. The official program was spread over three days in a minor Holiday Inn in a suburb 20 minutes southwest of Boston.
Friday, the first night, they had a recital of 4 local harpists. Lizary Rodríguez Ríos played a variety of awesome Latin American compositions (on a regular concert pedal) and even premiered a new piece, employing a lot of rhythmic bass techniques and knocking.
Franziska Huhn followed, with a pair of insane transcriptions for harp, Mozart K545 and Franck's Prelude Fugue & Variation op 18. I happen actually to be a pianist first and organist second (and harpist like... fourth, but I'm in love) and know these works well (well, everyone knows K545). The elements that blew me away in the Mozart transcribed for harp were the characteristic trills, which are whatever on piano but seem strenuous on harp, and the left hand bass scale runs, which it does not seem easy to do with the left hand nor to make a clean sound with bass wires. But she pulled it off. Franck was a weird choice. Going from organ to harp, or most any other instrument, is going to be a sacrifice since you usually have three staves of active counterpoint. Even the Liszt piano transcriptions of Bach organ works really suffer. So I was interested to see how she handled it. The Prelude introduces the gorgeous wistful theme, which was very good on harp. But once it moved into the contrapuntal sections, an opinion formed. I don't think fugues are meant to be played on the harp, with its resonance and relatively soft attack. It is basically the opposite of a harpsichord or organ in those respects. (And the organ should not play the Grandjany Rhapsodie or Salzedo Scintillation!). It all kind of melded together in a vaguely baroque wash of chord progressions, without any of the voices being clear. Not her fault but it was a weird choice in the first place.
After a short break, Krysten Keches played the opening of Glassworks and Debussy's Arabesque 1. Neat enough, but then she was joined by a violinist and they absolutely nailed the Saint-Saëns Fantaisie for violin and harp. Amazing collaboration and energy. As I'm learning more about the harp repertoire and getting exposed to what music there is, I'm always skeptical when they pair harp with another "string" instrument (like, say, Catrin Finch and Seckou Keita). It seems redundant to me. But violin added a whole lot to the piece with its biting attacks and staccato. Really good stuff.
To finish off the night Felice Pomeranz came up with a saxophonist and percussionist, and they blew us all away with some lighthearted jazz. A couple things came to mind as she was playing. I wonder what role in the jazz band the harp can play most effectively. Without a bassist, it definitely fills that role. But you'll also want to doodle in the treble, and for that it seems a lot like a piano. And yet... not. I don't know, I think I need to see some more to be convinced of harp in jazz. (Alice Coltrane stands alone) Far be it from me to criticize a tenured professor at Berklee for this, but it seemed like the harp was trying to do too much. Maybe if they had a bass then she would feel free to improv more freely in treble without trying to keep a walking bass going. Anyways, it was lots of fun, and I also saw a master of the crowd—she can definitely work the crowd and has a hilarious, very open and charming stage personality.
Anyways, that brings me to my flat tire. Alas, I got a flat on the way home and had to spend Saturday morning getting it fixed, so I missed the masterclass in the morning. Julie Smith Phillips was set to conduct a masterclass for four students, playing Tournier's Lolia la Danseuse, the Handel concerto 4/6, Debussy's Danse Sacree, and Grandjany's Rhapsodie. Missed it. Would've loved to see what guidance she would offer.
I made it in in the afternoon, and while the harp maintenance workshop was going on I went to see the exhibition. They set aside a room where they staged a dozen lever and pedal harps from Lyon & Healy and a couple by Salvi. Since the workshop was going on, the room was empty, and I think I played every one, in total bliss. I'd never touched a pedal harp before today and wow those things are massive. It was fun to play around and get some accidentals in, do some exotic glisses, gut strings are weird, and hammer out those massive bass wires. They had a couple electric ones and that wild 'delta'-shaped electric lever harp.
Then, across the room, our eyes met, and I knew I had to sit and play this handsome Chicago 40, in black and gold. Wow. I know now what they say about test driving instruments because this one just felt right. I loved the mellower sound and the overall experience. It's a smaller instrument and being relatively small myself I felt more at-scale with this one compared to the full 47s. I personally like the look of a straight, triangle soundboard, not so much the apparent standard, rounded ones that look like a butternut squash, although I know it affects the sound. And the black and gold just popped in all the right ways. I played it for probably 20 minutes until enough people were side-eyeing me that they wanted a turn.
Back to the program. I went to the maintenance workshop, where a technician from L&H walked us through what he does for regulation, replacing the felts, and the complicated business of maintaining whatever goes on in the column. Pretty cool.
(Then there was a dinner break so I went to IKEA since it was close)
Then the final evening recital by Julie Smith Phillips, who that morning conducted the masterclass. I am astounded that any one musician, let alone their fingers, can stage an entire two-hour solo harp recital. But she did it, and everything was incredible. Her program included a ton of standard showpieces—Handel Concerto 4/6, Grandjany's damn rhapsodie (I'm learning quickly that that must be the Fantaisie-Impromptu of harp), Fauré's Impromptu, and she closed with Salzedo's Scintillation (which is great on recording but unbelievable watching it live)—but also it was exciting to hear some 'new' and contemporary pieces by Michael Mauldin 'Birds in Winter' and her colleague and friend Hannah Lash's 'Tree Suite'. Very interesting new music with lots of fun sounds.
I'm super happy with what was mostly a free event (besides the flat tire patch). I was surprised to get a bizarre goodie bag with a USB powerbank (??), stickers (???), a pen (ok), a nail file (makes sense), string ends (nice!)—all branded, of course. I'm super motivated to wake up tomorrow and play. And I'll be thinking about that Chicago 40 for a long time.

2. Versuchen Sie nicht, allen zu gefallen
Zärtlich, gutmütig, mitfühlend - Sie erhalten häufig ähnliche Komplimente an Sie adressiert.

Was bringt denn Hysterie und Kränkung? Nichts!

Warum darüber nachdenken, was andere haben?

Deshalb habt keine Zweifel, sondern handelt!
